Crying in H Mart is the memoir to read if you want to appreciate the small things in life. The little details in your life you take for granted. Get your tissues and ice cold water ready!
For context, H Mart is a Korean Grocery store. Though I am not Korean, I have had my fair share of H Mart visits. Me and my family drive 20 minutes in order buy ingredients for Filipino dishes which you cannot find in American groceries. Many times I went to H Mart was with my Grammy. We would buy the components we needed for Chicken Adobo then window shop at the stores surrounding H Mart.
In October of 2023, I lost my Grammy to cancer and while reading this book, I felt like I finally found someone who understood my grieving. I too experienced reminders randomly sprinkled in each passing day and the regret of not learning her recipes to a T.
There is much that grieving has made me regret regarding my relationship to my Grammy. I chose this book as our second pick, despite its heavy subject, because with Mother’s Day right around the corner we all need to take a second to appreciate the women in our lives who would trade theirs for ours in a heartbeat.
